Jaali has worms!

Jaali has been a bit subdued for a few weeks and his coat has become dull and lifeless. Careful monitoring didn’t identify anything wrong until a 4cm worm turned up in his potty one evening.

A bit of research in google images quickly lead to the identification of roundworm. Check this google search to see some of these parasites.

Luckily the treatment is quite straightforward and the vet provided some Panacur dewormer and the right dose for a 2kg rat. The medicine is a liquid which needs taking with food once a day for five days. However finding something to mix it with which Jaali will then eat is proving difficult. He should be on his fourth dose today but he hasn’t taken all of any of his doses yet.

So far he’s been tempted with it soaked into a piece of digestive biscuit, mixed with a very small amount of peanut butter, mixed into apple juice and soaked into a piece of rivita. He has has a bit of each but never the whole dose.

The course of medicine needs repeating after a few weeks and by then a reliable delivery method should have been found.
